Hotel
Chateau de Mirambeau Bordeaux lies in the heart of eight
hectares of parkland in the area of Charente-Maritime, located
between the famed cities of Cognac and Bordeaux in France. A
large part of the chateau’s architecture dates back to the
17th Century while some areas are even older, originating from
the 12th Century. The original style of the hotel with its
dominating towers, galleries, spires and stone porticoes
transports guests back in time, allowing them to savor the
atmosphere of ancient chateau life. Following nine months of
complete renovation in 2003, the chateau offers 19 guests
rooms, all unique and featuring rare and antique furnishings
as well as four-poster beds. A very elegant restaurant
proposes regional and refined French cuisine served in a
charming and sensuous atmosphere. There are some cozy lounges,
ideal for relaxation and socializing. At the Cognatheque
lounge, guests have the choice of an impressive selection of
cognacs as well as cigars.

Castle living
is the new way to truly appreciate vacationing in Europe,
especially in France where castles are abundant. You don't
have to be a king in order to afford one either. You can stay
at this beautiful hideaway for the same price as a regular
four star hotel in Europe. Why simply stay at a hotel when
after a long day of sightseeing you can relax in a four-poster
canopied bed in your own castle! This hotel is also
"pet-friendly" so if you're traveling with your beloved pooch,
he or she will be pampered here as well.
Guests
can discover the treasures of this rural retreat and the
surroundings of Cognac through a variety of events and
packages. For example, the hotel can organize a unique wine
tasting, which includes wine from the 19th Century, followed
by lunch or dinner in a private house. Those who love the
outdoors will enjoy going on safari in Haute-Saintoge where
earth tracks, meadows and ponds reveal glimpses of animals in
their natural habitat. Discover the well-worn pathways of this
natural region on horseback, foot and bicycle or journey on a
sailboat along the coastline. Cuisine is an important part of
life in the region, which boasts two-starred Michelin
restaurants such as Château Cordeillan-Bages and the
Restaurant Richard Coutenceau.

THE CHARENTE
MARITIME REGION
|
|
The rich history
of the "Charentes Maritimes" region over the centuries is
revealed through its various museums, churches and buildings.
The natural heritage of La Rochelle: its unique
location in the middle of a natural Atlantic port has led to a
whole series of geographic peculiarities, such as the ancient
salt marshes, the town ditches and fortifications, and the old
commercial canals, today frequented by anglers, canoeists and
hikers. Several internationally famous products come from this
region: Cognac, Pineau… North of La Rochelle is Marais
Poitevin, more commonly known as "La Venise Verte" (the
Green Venice). The area is completely crisscrossed by canals
and rivers and has recently been declared a nature reserve.
The City of Saint-Émilion, famous for its full-bodied
red wines, undoubtedly deserves a visit. It is elegant and
cozy, and has many characteristic cobbled roads, medieval
buildings and romantic views. It is found in the Bordeaux
district of Medoc, which is where some of the most
prestigious red wines come from. This area has a long
vinicultural tradition and produces eight appellation contrôlée
wines. Over 750 species of vine are grown here, some of which
are famous throughout the world. Bordeaux: Bordeaux is
famous above all for its surrounding vineyards, and has been a
natural market place for the whole Aquitaine region since
Roman times. It has a medieval centre which stands on the site
of the Gallo-Roman settlement. In Bordeaux (216,000
inhabitants) you can admire and visit some of the best
examples of 18th century French architecture and an important
fine arts museum, or go for a fascinating walk along the river
near Quai de la Douane (the customs quay).
